Challenge for All: Development Programme for School Leaders and Teachers

Excelerating progress for Lambeth Pupils

Outline

This seven part programme, developed by Lambeth Schools Partnership and Sharing Excellence Partnership, will offer a series of evidence-informed professional development sessions for school leaders and teachers in Lambeth. Each session will address research that supports challenge for all students and will look into what the evidence means for our curriculum and teaching.

The sessions will be run by Ashley Knowles who works as an Assistant Headteacher at Dunraven school. Ashley specialises in evidence-informed teaching and learning strategies that can be embedded throughout the curriculum and used in the classroom.

Description

Session 1: Introduction to Challenge for All and the entitlement to a powerful curriculum.

  • What does challenge look like in the curriculum?

  • What are the principles of a challenging curriculum?


Session 2: What is the difference between a novice and an expert?

  • What does cognitive Science tell us about how students learn?


Session 3: How does retrieval practice lead to higher order learning?

  • Memory, cognitive load and retrieval practise – implications on the curriculum.


Session 4: Why is fluency essential to problem solving and creativity?

  • A look into how focusing on fluency frees up attention to focus on higher order application.


Session 5: How do we ensure our students become confident and knowledgeable speakers?

  • The importance of vocabulary within the curriculum.


Session 6: What motivates students to learn?

  • How do we ensure the correct balance of struggle and success? What is the correct balance?


Session 7: How do we ensure challenge for all in our schools?

  • How does this look in practice? Tying it all together and next steps.
